Black Forest Cake

A rich and creamy German dessert featuring layers of chocolate cake, whipped cream, and cherries.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 jar (24 oz) morello cherries, drained and juice reserved
  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • Chocolate shavings for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl.
  3. Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla; mix until well combined.
  4. Stir in boiling water until smooth.
  5. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pans.
  6. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  7. Allow cakes to cool for 10 minutes in the pans, then remove and cool completely on wire racks.
  8. Whip heavy cream with powdered sugar until stiff peaks form.
  9. Once cakes are cooled, slice each cake in half horizontally.
  10. Place one layer on a plate, drizzle with cherry juice, spread whipped cream, and layer cherries on top. Repeat with the next layers.
  11. On top, place the remaining layer of cake and frost the top and sides with the remaining whipped cream.
  12. Decorate with chocolate shavings and remaining cherries.
  13. Chill before serving.

Notes

Ensure all ingredients are at room temperature for better mixing. Chill the cake to help the whipped cream firm up, making slicing easier.
