Grandma’s Secret Lemon Bars

Delightful lemon bars with a buttery crust and zesty filling that bring back warm memories.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 cup cold butter, cubed
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2/3 cup fresh lemon juice (about 45 lemons)
  • 2 tablespoons lemon zest
  • Additional powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9×13 inch baking pan with parchment paper.
  2. Make the crust: In a large bowl, mix the flour, powdered sugar, and salt. Add the nutmeg. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture looks like coarse crumbs.
  3. Press the mixture firmly into your prepared pan. Bake for 20 minutes or until light golden brown.
  4. Whisk together the eggs and sugar until well combined. Add the flour and whisk until smooth. Stir in the lemon juice and zest.
  5. Pour the filling over the crust once it’s ready. Bake for an additional 20-25 minutes until the filling is set.
  6. Cool the bars completely in the pan on a wire rack for about 2 hours. Cut into squares and dust with powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

For a stronger lemon flavor, add more lemon zest. Use fresh lemons for the best taste.
